Coffee & Communications

Any staff within the College whose roles include communications are welcome to join our Coffee & Communications group!

We meet every other month from 11 a.m. -noon to share best practices when it comes to communicating with both external and internal audiences. We talk about websites, content creating, press releases, media relations, design, emails, newsletters, social media and many other communication strategies and platforms.

Interested? Email Kathy Hovis at kah53@cornell.edu to be added to our listserv. Recordings of past meetings are available in Cornell Box at the links below.

Have an idea for a topic we should cover at an upcoming meeting? Take a minute and fill out this short poll to let us know of some topics you would like to talk about!

  • Laurel Gilmer for her work on press releases, event promotions, keeping news of faculty and staff fresh on their website and just juggling a lot of things at the same time.
  • Our web team offered kudos to a bunch of departments/programs who did a nice job converting their grad field handbooks to online formats. Check out Africana studies, Near Eastern Studies, EEB and Economics.
  • Adrienne Clay and Monica McFall for their work managing events in American studies.

Meeting recording (only partial recording, sorry!)

  • Liz Kirk in anthropology for content creation on the department website, adding stories about new classes, events and student spotlights, along with the regular research news coming from their professors. Liz is also great about letting the College communications team know when faculty are in the news.
  • Julie McLean at the Society for the Humanities, for all of her coordination with the Humanities Scholars program, especially with a conference this year and the need to market the new program.
  • Jaclene Weston in Neurobiology & Behavior for her fastidious with work in Site Improve on accessibility goals, something we should all be doing.

April 2021

  • Content excellence: Kina Viola at the Society for the Humanities, who took over the annual print newsletter project and transformed it. Last summer, she designed the newsletter in the midst of a lot of additional Covid-related course coordination work, and also created an accessible pdf to post on the SHC website: https://cornell.app.box.com/s/3t6m5ph06vh3oqqbry775i317c1y6obp
  • Social media: We're honoring departments for their social media work on Giving Day, particularly physics for its photo collage and PMA for the photos it used on Giving Day.
  • Web: Heidi Lovette, assistant director of admissions, who has put together a strong vision for what we convey to our students on the admissions pages. She also led the process of creating a new page for admitted students.
